    Mykonos

    «Trasgressive» MykonosSaint John Hotel Beach

Mykonos is the most rule-breaking island in Greece and … most of the times is compared to Ibiza, in Spain.

Some info about Mykonos  – ελλ. Μύκονος

Μykonos is located in the Cyclades islands. It’s one of the most famous and popular Greek Islands that after Santorini and Crete  attracts thousands of visitors every year !

Mykonos is famous for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, it’s very exciting nightlife – that is the reason why it’s often compared to Ibiza – still it has all the beauties of the Cyclades islands – with it’s  whitewashed houses with turquoise waters.

As a typical Cycladic island, Mykonos landscape is very stony and hilly and almost treeless – still charming with its white washed houses and tiny white churches facing the sea

Comparing to other islands it’s quite expensive and this is one of the reason why here like in Santorini there is an exclusive tourism – this is really my style !!!

Mykonos windmillsYou can easily get to Mykonos since there is the airport and it’s well connected to Piraeus – with the boats

Mykonos Chora (the capital) is very charming and considered one of the most beautiful tows in the Cyclades – who doesn’t know the famous windmills of Mykonos or Little Venice ?

    Let’s go to my trip

I know … I said that Mykonos is a very °trasgressive° island ! but believe me . .. it depends with whom you are going to see this island ….. Actually I went to Mykonos with my mother, last September and unfortunately had no possibility to enjoy the night life … Mykonos seemed to me a very relaxing and charming island  ……

I am telling you this because I want to reassure people that maybe want to avoid this island because it’s famous for its night life – and because they are scared about finding a lot of chaos – but  don’t worry ! in Mykonos you can have the holidays you are looking for.

The landscape is charming, lot of sandy beaches with crystal waters, nice tavernas (some expensive) and beautiful sunset in the centre of Mykonos town ….. a real dream having your cocktail at Little Venice … waiting to the sun to set ….

Unfortunately I didn’t have the possibility to visit the island as I usually do – we were staying in a simply amazing – astounding chic hotel … with private beach ….. therefore … it was a real pity to leave all that beauty to look for other beache :)  – how to blame myself??! … I will never afford to pay another holiday like that …. it was my mummy present  :)  therefore I enjoyed the beauty of this luxury hotel !!! the massages …. the Jacuzzi etc ……

Still I can give you full description about the Mykonos town and a couple of other beaches I visited ! and I know … I need to come back to Mykonos, maybe with my friend Dimitris that he is from there – that told me that he will show me the island ! He loves Mykonos !!!

First  suggestion – if it blows ….. BRING A SCARF !! otherwise you will be freezing !!!! ahahhah

    Mykonos town

Little VeniceWhen you first get to the Chora you will be charmed by the ever famous windmills that introduce you to this charming and cozy Cyclades town

It has whitewashed cubic houses with wooden coloured doors, windows and balconies, narrow streets forming a labyrinth, beautiful churches, lovely chapels and purple bougainvilleas contrasting with the bright white of the buildings’ walls.

All the center is pedestrian, with narrow streets, numerous cafes, chic boutiques, souvenir shops and fine jeweleries –  as soon as you have a look at the shops … well you can understand that this is like Via Montenapoleone ! international brands….. very expensive shops ! I told you … Mykonos is very exclusive ! it’s like Montecarlo, like Saint Tropez  … like Saint Moritz …….

At sunset everyone is moving to “Little Venice” to see the beautiful sunset – while having a delicious drink !

    Travelling around the Island

I must advise you – all street are very very very narrow ! I think I never saw an island with such narrow streets. So .. be careful if you decide to drive ….

There are buses – but who knows at what time they come and usually they are pretty overcrowded …..

TAXI – could be a good solution at least for moving in the night. There are 2 taxis stops in Mykonos town –  you will be waiting for a long while but still it worth

    BeachesGialos Beach

A part from the private beautiful beach of the hotel, I only had the chance to visit the very Famous Paradise Beach and Platis Gialos

Paradise Beach – This is the beach of the party ! of the nightlife ! (I didn’t see it unfortunately in the night …. )  – it’s also where the camping is located. Here you can find nice food and cheap food.

The Beach is very sandy but …. there is a huge rock in the middle of the sea that really disappointed me  :(

Platis Yialos is one of the most popular beaches of the island, filling with thousands of people during summer time attracted by the golden sand and the wonderful turquoise crystalline waters.

On that beach you will also find Ammos Restautant – one of the famous restaurant in Mykonos – perfect for romantic dinners  ……. but for the day … well …. if you can afford to stay under their umbrellas you are very lucky J If I am not mistaken it was 40 euros per person  – very chic !!! my style !

    Dinner in Mykonos Town

In the Chora there are plenty of very nice restaurants ! Have a walk in the labyrinths chora to find yours :)

Close to Little Venice there are also good psari tavernas (tavernas with fish) where you can have lobster … but quite expensive !

I am waiting for Dimitris inviation to go back to Mykonos ! I will enjoy all the island and will write another updated chapter on Mykonos !

    Getting Married in Greece

Ursy and Kostas WeddingI just got married in wonderful Skopelos ! For me it has been like a fairy-tale…….

Maybe it never happened to you …. but sometimes I was reading magazines, reading articles or most of all looking at pictures of wonderful weddings in Greek Islands ……..

Most of the times the pictures were about Santorini, with romantic scenarios, beautiful coloured houses, windmills,  the greek blue sky and the sea  …..with a  beautiful tiny white church overwhelming the blue of the sky and of the sea ……. let’s say a dream for anyone ……

Well …. I don’t know HOW but I decided that that was my dream too and I had to do whatever I could to make this dream come true …… and it happened !! I made it (of course thanks to the man I love that supported me in any step of this difficult trip …… )

All happened end of September …. Kostas asked me to marry him ….. and in that moment I only had a picture in my mind …. me, him, close family and best friends …. in a lovely and extremely romantic place .. a small white Church by the sea …… there was nothing in my mind that had any relation with the place I was born  … the common places I used to live  …..  I wanted our Wedding to be like a fairy tail ………

I also had to admit that when I went to my town (I lived in Italy in a small town in the Alps) and occasionally went into a photographer shop …. and saw all my friend pics of their marriage … and now most of them are divorced ….. let’s say that this helped me to take the decision to make something different …..

Skopelos Village RestaurantOf course it helped me a lot living in Greece ! but despite of that ……  honestly that was not a very easy way …. an easy wedding…. at least that was not my case ….. everyone  made my life really impossible ……. starting from my family, saying that it was a real sufference for them not to see their only daughter getting married in their / our Church …. my friends complaining (and I cannot blame them honestly … ) that the wedding was very far ……. and very expensive …… and all small things (that are a lot) you need to do for a wedding …..become huge problems if  you get married in an island that you need 5 hours to get there …. unless you  have a perfect Wedding Planner ! (that I looked for and hadn’t find …. )

But  I have to admit that I will do it again and again because finally I was right … and we gave to all our guests an experience that they will always remember …. they will  always remember about our Big Fat Greek Wedding :)

Our guests are still talking about our Wedding after one week  :)

Ursy and Kostas WeddingGetting married in a Greek Island means:

    • to have by your side only the people that really love you !!!!
    • to have a long weekend
    • to enjoy the sea and the place
    • to have several parties
    • to spend a lot of time with your friends and family (and not just the hours of the Wedding)
    • and to see them also the day after … again for having fun and eat in a beautiful taverna by the sea

How to plan a Wedding in Greece

    • Be sure about this decision! family and friends will be quite disappointed (despite they will always love you!)
    • Plan it a lot in advance
    • Choose the island
    • Prepare a wedding web-site where all your guests can get information about the locations (how to get there, hotels, etc … ) – we had our great friend John that helped us on that !!!
    • Look for a Wedding Planner (i was not lucky and the ones I met were not as professional as I was expecting …. I know I am very precise and it is not easy to realize my dreams …. but you could be much luckier ! )
    • Meet the Priest
    • Start asking for all documentation you need and please consider that everything has to be translated in Greek ! If you have a Wedding planner make sure she is following all bureaucratic  issue for you
    • plan at least a couple of trips to the island to look for the Restaurant  (*)/ where to make the reception, talk with the lady of the flowers, photographer, DJ etc … if you have a wedding planner she will get you all contacts but I strongly suggest you to meet them before
    • Arrive to the island at least 4 days before your Wedding
    • Enjoy ! this is the best period of all your life ! and all you are doing it will be for your BIG DAY !
    • BE GRATEFUL TO YOUR GUESTS THAT TRAVELLED A LOT TO STAY BY YOU IN THIS VERY IMPORTANT DAY OF YOUR LIFE …….

As commented before, I had great time ! Our Wedding was exactly how I dreamt it ….. I couldn’t ask more. …….

For this reason, if you are thinking about a fairy-tail Wedding …. think about Greece !!!!! the perfect place to have your Marriage !!

Maybe I will become a Wedding Planner …. who knows. …. I should think about this change of life ……..

    Filakia !
    ciao

ps.  a huge thank you to all my friends for making all the pics you see in this post !

(*) I was very lucky! We had our Reception at Skopelos Village and Kyria Maria really helped us a lot with the organization of the event ! Thanks Kyria Maria and all the staff of Skopelos Village!

    Delphi

    Temple of ApolloDelphi

A couple of days ago we planned our trip to visit the Oracle of Delphi.

Some info about Delphi  – ελλ. Δελφοι
Delphi is one of Greece’s most significant historical place and is renowned for its archaeological sites.
Delphi’s archaeological site is filled with temples and structures, the most important temple being the Sanctuary of Apollo. It was constructed to honor Apollo for establishing the oracle of Delphi. The landscape surrounding Delphi is one of the most breathtaking in Greece – the location is on the slope of a mountain and you can enjoy the view of the whole valley below all the way to the Gulf of Corinth.

Treasure of Athens and other presentsDelphi is famous for the Oracle: when the priestess was consulted by pilgrims in order to get an answer from the gods, she inhaled the fumes of the hot springs and felt in trans.
Many decisions have been asked to the Oracle – to start wars, to celebrate weddings or to plan a trip. Even Alessandro the Great visited Delphi in order to listen to the Oracle.
Delphi moreover was regarded by the ancient inhabitants of Greece as the center of planet earth too.

How to get to Delphi: Delphi is located about 180km from Athens, the only way to get there is with the car or with the bus.

Byzantine ChurchLet’s go to my trip
A couple of days ago we decided to plan our trip to Delphi.
We left Athens at about 9 am and in only a couple of hours we were at Delphi.

The Archeological site is divided into two main areas:
Oracles of Delphi and the Temple of Apollo and the Gymnasium where is located the famous Temple of Athena and  Tholos.

First we decided to see the Temple of Apollo site, that is when you arrive on the right. There is a nice path that leads you to the place, first you see the rest of a Byzantine church, then going up to the hill all the presents that have been done to the Oracles, like the Treasury  of Athens and finally you get to the temple of Apollo and to the Theater .
Then we visited the museum, that I found very interesting and after a couple of hours of nice walk we decided to visit the second part of the Archeological Site – the Gymnasium, where the Temple of Athena and the Tholos are located.

TholosWe found many tourists there and I think that mostly of them are  French  since everything was written in English and in French :)

I also met a very nice man, with Italian origin (from Udine) that now was living in Australia ! it was amazing to listen to him and all the trips he did and was still doing !! I really hope to do the same when I will be 70s ahahha

We spent a very nice day, the weather was fine too and i really enjoyed my trip.

If you are planning to spend one week in Athens and to plan a  couple of days away from Athens I strongly suggest you  to go to Dephi – it’s really just 2 hours of trip and you will enjoy it!

    Lipsi

I visited Lipsi some years ago, when I spent my holidays in Patmos.

What Ι really liked about small Lipsi it was its truly quietness and the real calm atmosphere of a non touristic island ………

Some info about Lipsi  – ελλ. Λειψοι

Lipsi’ is a very small island located in the Dodecanese. It’s not very well connected with the boats, and there is no airport. The easiest way to reach Lipsi is to fly to Kos and to take the boat from there but you should check the time schedule first.
It’s very close to Patmos (12 km) and also close to Leros. It’s a very quite island where people still live in a very traditional lifestyle.
The only fact that you can reach most of the beaches on foot …. make you understand a lot about the quality of life and of holidays you can have in Lipsi

    Let’s go to my trip

I visited Lipsi some years ago when I spent my Summer Holidays in Patmos. We decided to visit this tiny island in one day. In the morning  we took the boat, brought our scooter too and in only 30′ of travel from Patmos we arrived in beautiful Lipsi.

The main town is by the bay, with small Cyclades  white houses, tavernas by the port, restaurants and  small shops. It was very different from very chic and trendy Patmos….
We decided to have a walk in the town, we had a coffee and then …. straight to the beaches.

We decided first to see how big that island was and we drove the main road, with the sea on both our sides … it was very nice ! with the wind caressing our hair ……

After about 15 minutes of driving we were at the end of the island …. and we were facing the most ever beautiful beach I ever saw: Platys Gialos Beach ….. it was like the picture of Maldives …. turquoise waters, white sand …. and a beautiful and quite small bay – that was our first stop on the beach!

There were very few people on that beach and what was very strange to me .. there were some Spanish …. bizarre !!

After a couple of hours we decided to come back to Lipsi town and visit all the nice beaches close to it. Most of them just after 5′-10′ of walk from the town …..
We spent our afternoon in a very delicious beach – with small white stones – Papandria Beach

I really recommend to spend a couple of days in Lipsi is you are already planning to spend your holiday in Patmos. It’ s very relaxing and the color of the sea is simply amazing

    φιλακια !
    ciao !

ps I will upload the pics next week :) sorry for that !

    ciao !
